NWI MUSIC

Dirt Cheap
By: Mona Dickinson

One of the best groups to emerge from Northwest Indiana music scene since late 1999, Dirt Cheap!!! is proof to old adage – a family that plays together, stays together.

Comprised of family members Larry Simoni (father), Chris Simoni (son), Michelle Simoni (daughter) and Brian Foret, the group has put together a tight sound and a new edge in great 80’s party rock and Top 40 entertainment.

Michelle Simoni handles the lead vocals, guitar and keyboard and brother, Chris Simoni plays guitar and shares vocals. Their father, Larry Simoni handles bass guitar and vocals. On drums is Brian Foret and Kurt Lucas is the sound tech for the group.

With music in their blood, the group emerged onto the area music scene in October 1999, making its debut appearance at Sportsman’s Hideway (now Sporty’s) in Bass Lake, IN. Now, a Halloween anniversary show, this year the group will mark its 12th year.

“For the past several years, we’ve moved across the water to The Sandbar,” noted Larry Simoni of the annual event.

With a mix of female and male vocals, the group has put together an extensive playlist, covering the music of the 80’s, 90’s and today, along with its own original music.

“We went went through many changes as far as lead singers,” Simoni added. “Taking our last from 45 songs per show to 17, and following what our fans wanted, Michelle stepped up to the plate and took the reins as the groups front person.”

With a variety of vocal techniques, Michelle Simoni has taken the group to many genres of music - from Poison, AC/DC, and Guns & Roses to Micheal Jackson, Katy Perry and Lady GaGa.

With an arsenal of songs, Dirt Cheap!!! can go from  club stage to festival stage at the drop of a hat. Group members always add an assortment of entertainment to each show.

Dubbed “One of the area’s most energetic group of performers,” Dirt Cheap!!! has a stage show that rivals national talent. Currently, they are filling local establishments to capacity on a very regular basis. They have been featured on local television and radio.

All members of Dirt Cheap!!! are from the Knox area. “This makes our rehearsals and show dates a lot simpler,” noted Larry Simoni.

“Most of the time, you can count on the group to arrive all in the same vehicle with equipment in tow, resting assured the show will be on time,” he added.

The band has stayed in a close proximity to its home base, with an occasional trip to Chicago, making extra time for their hobby but keeping their priorities in order with full time jobs.

A new club on its roster starting this summer has been Sportsman’s Lounge in South Haven.

“Russ Lagneau and his staff have been great and it’s become our home away from home,” Larry Simoni said. “We’ve added shows starting Sept 25th with Sportsman’s 2nd Annual Bike Run and running though the end of the year with monthly shows.”

The band has also been feaured in clubs such as the Indiana Beach Resort, the Blue Chip Casino, Friends Night Club in LaPorte,  Buddy & Pals in Schererville and South Bend’s Club Landing.

They get the crowd up and rocking with a a repertoire encompassing the pop to hard rock and everything in between.

The band’s Top 10 All Time Favorite Crowd Pleasers includes (in no particular order) I Love Rock and Roll, Highway To Hell, December 1963, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Billie Jean, You Shook Me All Night Long, I Want You Back, All Summer Long, I Want You To Want Me and What’s Up.

Dirt Cheap!!! has also released its first original studio release, which is now available through the group’s website ( www.dirtcheapband.com ) and through its social networking pages –Facebook and MySpace.

The group’s website and other pages also include pictures and video clips from past performances, as well as the latest news and upcoming shows.

Sixteen Candles
By: Courtenay Stewart

Remember when you were watching Say Anything, Pretty In Pink, or The Breakfast Club? You were spraying your hair with Aquanet, doing the Superbowl Shuffle, and of course, wearing Z Cavaricci’s. Now you can listen to your favorite 80’s tunes; Sixteen Candles is Chicago's best 80’s band.

The five members of Sixteen Candles are Adam LeBlanc as the singer, Chris Hagen on drums, Danny Weymouth on bass, Dave Ensslin on guitar, and Scott Barbeau on keyboards.

The band got its start in 2003, when Dave decided to start a side project. A drummer friend approached him to start an 80’s band. They started throwing names around and took Sixteen Candles as a play on the popular 80’s movie. They played their first show at Hog Head McDunna’s in Lincoln Park in 2003. From there they kept playing more and more until the members ended all their other bands because Sixteen Candles had taken off. The band marketed itself very well and caused the band to grow quickly. It had been so long since people had heard that type of music, the timing of the band was perfect.

The band has been said to sound like an 80’s pop orgasm and plays your favorite hits from bands such as; Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Wham!, Men At Work, Talking Heads, The Cars, Tiffany, New Kids on the Block, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, and the list goes on and on.

There are two main things that make the band extremely successful. The first is the concept of Sixteen Candles’ stage show. It happened from playing on stage together and trying to make each other laugh. They would try to entertain each other and it just happened to become part of the show. Secondly, they work extremely hard to make the songs authentic and everyone plays their role.

Sixteen Candles has had many accomplishments, but the ones that they are most proud of are selling out Joe’s on Weed St. and the Cubby Bear. They strive to break attendance records at most of the venues that they play at.

Sixteen Candles makes it their personal duty and pleasure to bring all the great 80's songs you love to life in full force. Their attention to detail and commitment to entertainment captivates audiences and inspires new ways of dancing and thinking (not to mention drinking). The members have a simple love for the music of years gone by and a mission to fuse nostalgia and style to create a sight/sound spectacular unlike any other.

You can check out Sixteen Candles at www.sixteencandlesband.com or by searching for Sixteen Candles Band on Facebook.

3 NWI Music - Stevie B

NWI MUSIC

STEVIE B
By: Coutenay Stewart

Stevie B. is a singer, songwriter, and producer from Miami who was highly influential in the Latin freestyle and high energy music scene. Also known as the King of Freestyle, Stevie B is perhaps best-known for his 1990 number-one hit "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)."

How did you get your start?

I was trying to be a producer to get into the more professional side of the recording business. My interest in engineering and producing got me to go buy my own equipment and I would go into the studio myself and play around laying down tracks. People said it was good and my songs started to get noticed by local DJ’s and radio stations, especially Power 96 in Miami.

Who coined the term “King of Freestyle”?

The term was made by the people. No one could identify the style of music. It wasn’t R&B, Hip Hop, or Latin. Originally it was Latin dance, but it was free of any boundaries. And then I would throw in a Pop Ballad to compete with the artists at that time. I wasn’t even thinking about freestyle.

Where were you the first time that you heard your song on the radio?

I was in Miami and Power 96 started playing my songs in their daily mix. It was almost like a make it or break it type show. People started calling in and asking about the songs, so they started playing them more.

What made you get involved in the Latin freestyle and high energy music scene?

Lisa Lisa was established and freestyle had just started hitting the airwaves. It was a style that was open and didn’t have a lot of competition.

What albums have you released?

I have released 11 albums from to 1988 to 2009. Out of those 9 albums, 25 singles have hit on the Billboard Top 100.

What are some of your biggest accomplishments?

One would have to be raising a family. On the music side, I have been able to express myself freely and have been able to work with some of the world’s biggest artists and I have had a number one record. But the biggest accomplishment is that I have been maintaining music and have had a performing career for 25 years.

Everyone wants to know, was there someone in mind for your song Spring Love?

There was someone special in mind, but it was more a song for the period of time.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations and influences?

A lot of the older music groups influenced me, such as Earth, Wind, and Fire. From early on, I emulated Michael Jackson and the Jackson family. Another would be Barack Obama and anyone else that can make it after not having a lot of opportunity. In 1989 MTV would not play Because I Love You, because it was considered too black, which inspired me to keep going, but then when Hip Hop and R&B started, I wasn’t black enough. When I started, I was in a garage band and a lot of people were influencing me to stay on track and not venturing into other things. My friends helped me make good decisions.

Did you think that freestyle would become as big as it is and now with the new music scene, do you think that freestyle will make a comeback?

I actually thought it would be bigger at that time, but music cycles usually come back around every 15 to 20 years. It is now making a comeback, because all styles of music are now using top freestyle music beats, especially with the newer, fresher artists. It is always growing and advancing in other states and countries and now you are hearing the styles infused together. The best artists know how to steal from the best and a good producer can infuse all these beats to make it commercial for the ever-growing pop culture.

Another thing everyone wants to know… What’s on your iPod?

Well, I mostly listen to XM radio and like to listen to the 80’s on 8 and the 60’s on 6, but I like Smokey Robinson to the 60’s and 70’s. Music is like food. You don’t have to like one particular thing. It is more of a buffet. What I listen to completely depends on the mood that I am in.

“I would just like to say one more thing. I am so appreciative of Chicago and the fans, as well as the other areas of the Midwest and am so glad to be coming back to the area. And special thanks to B96 and definitely Julian ‘Jumpin’ Perez for supporting me for the last 25 years.”

You can see Stevie B. live on Friday September 17th at The Venue, located in the Horseshoe Casino. He will be performing with K7/TKA, Cynthia, George Lamond, and Nice and Wild.

NWI MUSIC

THE BREAKFAST CLUB
By: Courtenay Stewart

The Breakfast Club is a high energy rock/dance '80s tribute band, whose every song is a hit that brings the house down with spontaneous, exuberant 'I know this song!' sing-along’s. Moonwalk down memory lane with The Breakfast Club as they spin you right round to all the radical sounds, styles, and cool dance steps from the 1980's, in over-the-top retro 80's attire.

"The Breakfast Club" has quickly become one of Chicago's top 80's party bands. For starters, it's one of those rare bands where the name alone can help attract an audience since it clearly states what they do. The Breakfast Club is a very high energy band that keeps your crowd partying by performing creative medleys of popular hits from the 80's.

How and when did the band get its start?

Breakfast Club has been together for 5yrs after a weird wet dream about Molly Ringwald.

How did you come up with the name of the band?

We wanted a name that would easily describe the music and era we're doing here.

Where was the first place that the band played?

Think that was Duffy's in Chicago, definitely in the city. It was a huge crowd and we had people dancing with us on stage right off the bat and coming out dressed up as we do, they loved it.

How did you come up with the concept of the band?

We wanted to put on a fun show and play what are some of the greatest hits from that 80's MTV top 40 era…and again Molly.

What do you think has made the band so successful?

The show, the clothes, the energy and of course the songs, we love to have fun with the crowds and they respond to that.

What are some of the bands biggest accomplishments?

Working the casinos, festivals and venues, being hired for private parties - staying very busy these days.

What is a typical live show like?

We'll play some hits that will bring back some of those great memories and are sure to get people dancing and rocking with us as well as some of the sing-alongs. And of course, you can’t forget the costumes.

Why did you choose this genre of music?

Its good 80's party time music....and again Molly

What is the best live show that you have ever done?

We have opened for the GooGoo Dolls and Coolio.

What are some of the goals for the band in the upcoming future?

First rocking out with The Warehouse in Valparaiso on August 13th is on the list....maybe to be in the next Chase VISA or Freecreditreport.om commercial

You can check out Breakfast Club at www.breakfastclublive.com or at facebook.com/breakfastclubchicago. Breakfast Club will also be performing live on Friday August 13 at The Warehouse in Valparaiso, IN.

MR. FUNNYMAN AND ECHOES OF POMPEII
By: Courtenay Stewart

Mr. Funnyman has entertained thousands in the Indiana, Illinois and Michigan areas. From modern and classic rock to blues, oldies, r&b and funk, Mr. Funnyman provides the fun and excitement of a live band for any occasion.

Mr. Funnyman started when three of the members who played together in a previous band started to get really serious about their music. So in 1992, they decided to form a new band. They didn’t have a concept in mind, they didn’t want to limit themselves and play all the music that everyone who would happen to come out and hear them would want to listen to. They started playing all types of music from Sly and the Family Stone to U2 to Neil Diamond.

The name came from an Eddie Murphy skit and was something that they would call themselves when making fun of each other. Their first show was at a bar in Crown Point for a Halloween party. This show went very well and they figured out that they were definitely a party band, so they decided to go the route of playing all the hits instead of the originals.

Mr. Funnyman has had a lot of success over the last 18 years, mainly because they have had the same core members for so long and have such a good time playing together that it radiates out to the fans. They have also had the opportunity to play for very large crowds such as at the Buildwater in Michigan (one of their favorite shows), an outdoor fest where they played to approximately 5000 people.

Their main goal is to always keep things fresh. After playing for 18 years, they will always play the classics, but with their fans always evolving, they try to keep up with all the current music.

Mr. Funnyman’s alter ego is Echoes of Pompeii. This is a great Pink Floyd Tribute Band. Mr. Funnyman came first, but they decided to do a tribute show at the Lake County fairgrounds, because they would do a lot of Pink Floyd in their Mr. Funnyman show. So they advertised locally through X-Rock and Indiana 105 and the show turned out great. Their name was chosen from the album Echoes and this album was played by Pink Floyd live at Pompeii.

Pink Floyd fit the band well. They have 4 guys that all sing and a keyboardist that had a knack for the Pink Floyd sound, so their harmonies blend together extremely well. And when playing Dark Side of the Moon, they even bring in a female singer to make the harmonies even better.

This national touring Pink Floyd tribute band from the Chicagoland area delivers a true replication of a Pink Floyd concert.  Echoes of Pompeii (EOP) has an amazing laser/light and video show ensuring the audience of a spectacular production when performing the music.  EOP is complete with many of the stage props that their heroes are known for while backed by an experienced management, light and sound crew.  They play all the favorite Pink Floyd hits that everyone knows and loves and have showcased entire albums from start to finish, demonstrating remarkable musicianship on stage.  Audiences have been impressed with the technical similarities of the shows. They also put a large movie screen on stage and play outtakes from the Wall while performing.

One of their largest and favorite shows was at the Arcadia Theatre in Chicago. At the time, they were completely unknown in that area, but put on such a great show that to this day still continue to play there. Right now, their goals are to put together another large show at the Lake County Fairgrounds, as well as try to build up their crown in Indiana.

Members of both bands consist of Jason Andrews on lead vocals and guitar, Andy Hescher on backup vocals and lead guitar, Jeremy Andrews on backup vocals and bass guitar, Rob Martinez on backup vocals and keyboards, and Mike Perriera on drums and percussion.

You can check out Mr. Funnyman at www.mrfunnyman.net and on August 14 at Lakes of the Four Seasons Summerfest. For information on Echoes of Pompeii, check out www.echoesofpompei.com.

ADAM SAVAGE
By: Courtenay Stewart

Growing up in the Hammond/Hessville area with influences by rap and hip-hop artists such as 2-Pac, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E, Adam Savage started writing his own lyrics when he was only 13 years old. Even though his influences were mostly Gangster Rap, he developed his own style and concepts to write about.

Adam calls his style club hip-hop. It is more of a Black Eyed Peas inspired uptempo, party music. This year was the first year that Adam started performing live. He has done three shows thus far. Adam’s first was at the Cubby Bear in Chicago, which led to an opening spot at Meyers Castle for Twista, and then he headlined a large show at The Warehouse in Valparaiso.

His success has happened really fast. With only three live shows under his belt, Adam is already in a regular rotation on 103.5 Kiss FM. He contacted Kiss FM and they told him that they had a local music day where you could sit down with the program director and if he liked your music, he would put it on the radio. When Adam sat down, the program director loved his music so much, he set him up with an on-air interview with Ty Bentli, who started playing Adam’s music which led to people calling in and requesting it. He has also been entered into a contest on Kiss FM for a chance to play at the Coca-Cola Lounge for a record contract. This contest started in July, but will continue through August. It goes off of votes, so make sure that you go to www.1035kissfm.com and vote for Adam Savage.

In 1999, Adam released an online and local mixtape titled "Tracks From The Past" which included 20 songs that Adam had worked on in his younger years as an artist. And in May, he released his first full length album titled “Hot Mess”. The theme for Hot Mess is a party scene and he combines house music and techno with hip-hop. Adam is 25 and married, but still likes to have a good time, so every song is a feel good track, but also tells an emotional story about where he is going. You can get Adam’s CD on iTunes.

His ultimate goal is that of most other artists, to get a recording contract, but also to do more shows, and he aspires to be like LMFAO, which is his style of music.

You can check out Adam at www.adamsavagemusic.com and if you want to see him, Adam will be performing live on Saturday August 21st at The Warehouse in Valparaiso.

1 NWI Music - Wedding Banned

NWI MUSIC

WEDDING BANNED
By: Courtenay Steward

“Wedding Banned is an outrageous musical experience from powder blue tuxedos, bawdy humor, hyperactivity, and mustaches to rockin' hits from the 80's and more. They turn every show into a wedding reception, plucking two unsuspecting members of the audience to become the "bride" and "groom"...... Will you be next?”

Wedding Banned got their start about 4 and a half years ago when two of the members who were in a Neil Diamond tribute band decided to do more of a show where the audience knew everything that they played. They wanted to make it more of an interactive show that could constantly evolve. The characters, bride and groom, as well as the songs change with every show. The band was a little perplexed on how to do a cover band as they had only been playing in original bands and a couple tributes their whole careers. Their first show they played for free at the Pontiac - now the Big Star in Wicker Park in Chicago. This was definitely a small show; however they played to a stellar crowd. Their first big show was at Retro on Roscoe, which they continue to play at every year since.

The concept of Wedding Banned came about by Bruce when he started thinking about all the over the top wedding bands. The kind of band where the bride and groom loves it, but the parents get so offended that they want to leave the reception. This band is totally it. Their slogan is “skip the ceremony and start the party.”

Mayor Manaconda is the international singing superstar and jet setting ladies man that is on lead vocal duties and lead cowbell. Known for his model good looks, stylish dress and amazing voice, Manaconda is perfect for this job. Vinnie Van Action met Bruce Winche’ll and Bruce desperately tried to recruit him for guitar duties in the famed Neil Diamond tribute band, Love on the Rocks. Vinnie told Winche'll, "I play rock n roll you sissy. Call me when you get a rock band together." Winche'll got the message and called VVA when he needed a lead guitar player for Wedding Banned. Bruce Winche’ll, age unknown, has been playing bass professionally for 17 years and entertaining even longer. You probably remember him from his 80's pop metal band, Smooth Cheetah. However, nothing can keep the driven Winche'll down and he is back rocking the world in Wedding Banned. Alfredo Muffalotta, on Keyboard and Rhythm duties, is the newest member of Wedding Banned. Alfredo's official bio is currently being compiled by the Wedding Banned public relations team. All we know at this moment is that he likes Italian food, go figure. The Gooch, because he always "gooches" the ladies (aka Ted Spumonte), burst onto the national scene in 1989. The Gooch and Winche'll are one of music's most attractive and dynamic rhythm sections. Together forever, they now make up the powerful rhythm section of Wedding Banned. Linda Ballzenstein is the Wedding Planner. Ballz, as her close friends call her, has an extensive musical back ground that is tragic and inspirational. Trapped in the ghettos of Tupelo Mississippi, she was forced to work to feed her abusive family. Young Linda was discovered on a rough street corner, hustling tourists for change with her amazing vocal abilities. She called herself "Young Elvis". She now performs with Wedding Banned on a nightly basis, and her energy and voice has made her a star, once more.

Some of the greatest accomplishments of Wedding Banned is that they have seen about 30 bands that have emulated them come and go. They knew going in that a lot of bands would be playing the same songs, but they have kept going because people want to see the shows, talk about the shows, and be a part of the party. Another big accomplishment is that they all have day jobs and are able to still play about 100 shows a year. When their goal was once to be able to play some of the major clubs in the Chicagoland area, they have now played and sold out all of these major clubs. It is a fantastic accomplishment to see 1,000 people come to see them play. They started with a free show and are now one of the largest drawing cover bands in the area.

The band has four major goals for the future; to get bigger, make more money, have more fun, and get more free drinks.

You can check out Wedding Banned at www.weddingbanned.com or see them live on Friday July 9, 2010 at It’s Vegas Baby at The Blue Chip Casino.

2 NWI Music - Shy Violet

NWI MUSIC

SHY VIOLET
By: Courtenay Stewart

The 1990’s featured a revival of the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s, which was closely connected to third-wave feminism as well as the Lilith Fair. Now, an up and coming cover band relives through those artists of the 90’s. Shy Violet is a Chicago based band that performs a blend of classic 90’s dance and pop with a touch of 80’s through current radio hits. The band consists of a powerful rhythm section fronted by two charismatic female vocalists.

The band started a little over a year ago when the two lead singers, Lina and Ginger did auto shows as product specialists. Lina went to a Spazmatics show and the lead singer decided he wanted to start a girl group. The rest of the band lineup is Rockin’ Richard on Bass, Jammin’ Angel on Guitar, and Effervescent Matt on Drums.

The name, Shy Violet, comes from a Rainbow Brite character. They were looking for something very girly and the name seemed to fit. They are not shy, so the first word was very tongue in cheek for them, and violet was a color that portrayed the girly aspect that they wanted. They also liked the name because with a name like Shy Violet it fit the goals and the kind of band that they wanted to represent. It was versatile enough to play not only bars and festivals, but also corporate events.

Their type of music also fits in with how they want to be portrayed. Because they are such girly girls they wanted to cover the 90’s pop that not a lot of people cover. They all share an appreciation for pop music, so a lot of their music is guilty pleasure tunes, but they do throw in some current hits. You can hear many different songs from artists such as, Vanity 6, Jane Child, En Vogue, Lady Gaga, Destiny’s Child, Lisa Stansfield, Martika, Pink, Sheena Easton, Britney Spears, Crystal Waters, Alanis Morrisette, and so many more.

But, don’t think that this is just another cover band. Ginger is musically trained in musical theatre and sings with an acapella quartet, while Lina is a classically trained opera singer. Their harmonies are spot on and if you want to hear music that comes as close to the artist’s rendition without having to see the artist, this is definitely the band. They are constantly working on their show to keep their audience dancing and engaged and their hard work is paying off. Shy Violet hasn’t been around for a very long time, but they are getting some big shows and have accelerated as a Chicago cover band which is really hard to do. They are now breaking into not only the Northwest Indiana market by playing a regular show at Northwood’s in St. John, but also the summer festival market. Recently, Shy Violet played two shows, which they have said were definitely among their favorites. The first was at Northwood’s for their summerfest and Mid Summerfest in Andersonville, Illinois. Both were packed shows with high energy and lots of dancing.

The band hopes to continue on as a working cover band and aim to be versatile enough to play any type of show that might come at them. They would also like to start writing and recording original music and create a wide enough fan base that people would come to see their originals as well as the cover show.

Shy Violet is a band that is a lot of fun with comedy, singing, and dancing and if you get a chance please check them out. You can see them live on July 23rd at Northwood’s in St. John and for more information, check out www.shyvioletband.com or www.facebook.com/shyvioletband.

1 Robby Celestin

ROBBY CELESTIN
By: Courtenay Stewart

This is a true singer.  Robby Celestin was brought up on classic soul music and has brought that passion to every style he encounters.  He is an emotional vocalist with a fantastic range and an unstoppable stage show.  You won't see anyone sing from the heart like the "Man in the Hat". An energetic performer and wonderful songwriter, Robby will move you every time you experience him.  His lyrics are smart and moving and his songs are all memorable. He speaks of life, love, and everything in between.

Growing up, Robby’s dad was a singer with a soul group on Atlantic Records called The Enchanters that played with the Jackson Five before they were signed with Motown, so Robby learned about music from a very young age.  He was glued to all of his dad’s practices and learned how to put together a band.  He did his first show in High School at the age of 16 with a cover band.   For a decade he traveled looking for his big break and was almost signed to Capitol Records a few years back.  When he wasn’t signed, Robby was going to quit the music business all together, because he grew up thinking that you needed to be famous to be a legitimate musician, but a friend named Billy Shelton pulled him aside and they had a talk that included Billy telling Robby that he doesn’t have to be famous, that he already is a legitimate musician.

The Robby Celestin Band stems from his third CD “Voiceprints”.  His first CD was a solo self-titled CD and his second CD was with the band TimePeace.  The CD Voiceprints has garnered critical acclaim and has become an independent favorite with fans all over the globe, even in Japan and the Czech Republic.  When he went into the writing and recording of this CD, he approached it in a different way; he wanted to write and record music for himself.  He didn’t worry about what was going to be a hit or how the CD was going to be received, but instead what he wanted and interestingly enough, it is the most successful CD that Robby has ever done.  The CD release party was played to a stellar turnout at the Halls of St. George in Schererville, Indiana.

A fan pointed out one day that The Robby Celestin Band was a good mix between Dave Matthews Band and Marvin Gaye.  This makes complete sense as Robby’s inspirations and influences stem from not only soul music and Motown but also The Beatles, Blues Travelers, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Dave Matthews, and Curtis Mayfield.

The Robby Celestin Band consists of the finest musicians in Chicago and Northwest Indiana.  One of Robby’s main ideas is to always surround himself with great musicians.  Musicians that he says are even better than him.  His strong suit is writing all the melodies and lyrics, so by surrounding himself with such talent, he is able to bring his music to a whole new level.

This Chicago singer has performed at the White House and even in Bosnia for the troops with the international vocal group Stormy Weather. He has opened up for and shared the stage with many nostalgic bands such as, the Four Tops, Survivor, E.L.O., Little River Band, Malo, Tierra, El Chicano, Maurice Williams, Jerry Butler, Brooklyn Bridge and many more.

Robby made his mark throughout the Chicagoland/NW Indiana area as the lead singer of TimePeace and TimePeace Unplugged. In 2008, he became the lead vocalist for Chicago's newest variety group Final Say and performs 150 shows a year with Final Say.  A lot of people think that because he has a CD, he should be going for the gold and trying to get signed, but he believes Final Say gives him the ability to do what he has always wanted to do, sing for a living.    This is his job and what he gets to do everyday.

Don't pass up a chance to see this man in action.  Don't pass up a chance to hear this man sing. Don't pass up a chance to experience the power and passion that is Robby Celestin.  You can check out Robby at www.robbycelestin.com, where you can see performances and listen to some songs.  Robby will be on stage live on Sunday June 13 at Northwood’s in St. John, Indiana for Northwood’s Summerfest.

2 The Walk-Ins

The Walk-Ins

The Walk-Ins are a harmony driven, cover/original band, from Chicago’s south suburbs. The band consists of Joe Matise (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Mike “The Deuce” Michor (Lead Guitar, Vocals), Mike Molinets (Drums, Vocals), and Dan Dougherty (Bass, Vocals). The Walk-Ins’ set list spans from the 50’s to today’s music, and their high-energy live shows have been met with rave reviews across the Chicagoland area.

The Walk-Ins started in 2006 when Joe and Mike Molinets split off from their band and started playing acoustic shows.  The other two members joined in early 2007 and the band played their first show, to a packed house, at JW Hollstein’s in Tinley Park in March 2007.  To the band, this was the greatest way to start.

The name The Walk-Ins came from a skit on Saturday Night Live, with Christopher Walken, where he is constantly asking the band for more cowbell.  They couldn’t decide on a name, but took The Walk-Ins since they are such big fans of Christopher Walken.

The band plays a very eclectic mix of music and their motto is “If you haven’t heard it, we don’t play it.”  You will hear everything from Elvis Presley to Motown, classic rock to 80’s, and even some rap thrown in, if the opportunity presents itself.  They chose to go this route so that they are very listener friendly.  They don’t like to listen to the same thing and with their crowd you never know who is in the audience, so they try to play something for everyone.  The Walk-Ins draw their inspiration from a lot of different artists, as you can see from their set lists, however their biggest influences are The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Prince.  Joe said, “If we can have a Prince song in our set list, we are extremely happy.”

Their shows are a lot of fun as one of their main goals is not to simply entertain, but to have as much crowd interaction as possible.  The more people that have fun, the more fun the band has.  They like for everyone in the crowd to enjoy what they are doing, because these excellent musicians are enjoying what they are doing.

Some of The Walk-Ins biggest accomplishments are, playing at the House of Blues, opening up for Dustin Diamond (Screech from Saved By The Belle) at both Cubby Bear locations, and sharing a stage with the Barenaked Ladies at Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park, Illinois.  Currently, they are very proud to be working on releasing an untitled LP.  It will be out shortly, and although there isn’t really a common theme to the LP, all the songs are ones that people can relate to.  To hear there first single, Away From You, go to their web site www.thewalkins.com.

The Walk-Ins play 140 gigs a year, so their goals are to stay busy, but to stay fresh and continue expanding their fan base so that they can continue to play 3 times a week.  Another goal is to be able to record more originals.

You can check out The Walk-Ins, performing live, on Thursday June 17 at Northwoods, in St. John, Indiana, for more information visit www.thewalkins.com.

3 Your Villain My Hero

Your Villain My Hero
By: Courtenay Stewart

Your Villain My Hero combines top 40 pop, club, and dance music with a sexy, high energy stage show to keep you dancing all night long.  Lead Vocalists J. Lee and Mig share an electric chemistry on stage, exchanging pop melodies and the occasional old school rhyme over a backdrop of danceable favorites as played by the rest of the band.

The band consists of 5 members; J. Lee on Vocals, Miguel More on Vocals/Rapper, Jay Kijek on Guitar, Betina Gozo on Bass, and Mike Hussa on Drums.  Your Villain My Hero started when a few of the band members got together with Roger Jansen and decided to fuse all their pop, dance, hip hop, and rock influences together into one incredible show.  They went through a few different singers until finding J. Lee after she answered an ad on Craigslist.  They had one practice together before playing in October 2009 at Durty Nellies in Palatine.  She had to learn 20 different songs in one day and she nailed it.  They chose the name “Your Villain My Hero” because it signifies having confidence in yourself.  “Self-confidence comes from within and no one else can take it from you once you have it.  Other people can say what they want about you, but being true to yourself transcends that.”

Your Villain My Hero has been successful mostly based on their great live show.  They do a lot of mashups with old school hip hop to current top 40.  But, their first and foremost priority is that people walk away feeling entertained.  They say that this is the key to their band.  Their act would compare to that of Black Eyed Peas, Cobra Starship, or Gorillaz.  Their biggest influences are Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and the Black Eyed Peas.  They like to do shows similar to the Black Eyed Peas because of their melting pot of rhymes and melodies.

Your Villain My Hero has had some large accomplishments, but the ones they are most proud of would be MOBfest Music Conference closing party at LaSalle Power Company in Chicago.  They were hired to play Chicago Music Scene Magazine’s New Year’s Eve Party at the Drake Hotel, and shot their music video for “I Don’t Need A Boyfriend” at Enclave Nightclub in Chicago for 1200 people.  The toughest thing that the group has had to overcome is their frustration with their day jobs and school.  Each of the band members work or goes to school full time in addition to playing shows every moment that they can.

The group’s ultimate goal is to go on a world tour similar to that of U2, but for the time being they would like to build their fan base as much as possible in as many markets as possible, one fan at a time.  They would also like to release a new single with a video every quarter.  But, right now, they are just focusing on having fun and putting on a killer show.

You can check the band out at www.yourvillainmyhero.com or www.myspace.com/yourvillainmyhero or you can see them on Saturday June 12th at Its Vegas Baby at The Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, Indiana and on Saturday July 10th at Northwood’s in St. John, Indiana

1 Too White Crew

TOO WHITE CREW
By Courtenay Stewart

“Alright, STOP.  Collaborate an' LIS-en.”   Remember when hip-hop talked about sex?  When you could Bust a Move, Shake the Rump, do the Humpty and no one was poppin' caps?  When Bel Biv Devoe called all y'all tricks "Poison" and warned all the fellas to "never trust a big butt & a smiiiiiiile"?  So does Chicago’s Too White Crew.  As the song goes, “We'll drink up all the Hennessey you got on yo' shelf, so just let us introduce ourselves...”

Too White Crew is the first and only live hip-hop band on earth.  It started in 2002 when C-Note was in a rock band and one of the members went on to form Hairbanger’s Ball.  He was not done playing, but he wanted to do something different.  He realized that when he played the old school hip hop on his iPod, in between the sets, the dance floor would get packed, so he figured, why not get a band together to play that music.  However, he wanted to do everything live, so they had to think out of the box and get a lot of instruments to do electronic music.  Too White Crew is a LIVE band.  There is no pre-recorded music.  Musically, the credentials are there.  This is not two turntables and a microphone.  And what name is better to state who they are and what they do, than one formed from a play on words after 2 Live Crew.

This band grew up on old school hip-hop, and they new that over the last decade hip-hop had gotten a bad name due to the way that mainstream hip-hop is promoted.   They didn’t just want to play music that people danced to, they also wanted to show people that hip-hop didn’t start out as self-glorification.  That it was a party spirit, going all the way back to the beginning of hip-hop with songs like Rapper’s Delight and Jam On It by Newcleus.  Even the music videos had a party spirit back then and were often very comical with different layers.

Their first show was at Joe’s, on Weed Street in Chicago, in December of 2002.  And Joe’s will always remain their home bar.  They based the band on the premise that they would just play Joe’s once a month and from there it turned into a love, passion, and ultimately, a living.  Since then, they have gained a lot of success through their entertainment value, and by being the most unique tribute band in the world.  They have played from the east coast to the Playboy Mansion on the west coast, the Luxor in Las Vegas, and have even had offers from Asia.  They are one big happy family with a great chemistry that likes to clown around on stage at their shows, while staying true to their music.  They have had the opportunity to open for great hip-hop artists such as, Tone Loc, Vanilla Ice, Naughty By Nature, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, and Digital Underground.  They were offered an opening slot for Public Enemy at the Hip-Hop Appreciation Awards in NYC, but unfortunately couldn’t due to conflicting schedules.

All the members of the band sing, rap and play at least one instrument.  TWC consists of C-Note who plays keyboards and is the MC, Woodsy Fresh on drums, DJ Shor-T on keyboards and turntables, M-80 on keyboards, (Miggida) 3 Matt on Bass, and Cornbread on guitar.  The fly girls are Juicebox, Hot Wheelz, D-Train, and Vitamin V bringing back the choreographed “In Living Color” moves from back in the day.

This band is as high energy as it gets, with 4 guys and 4 girls on stage, rapping, singing, dancing, and exchanging instruments.  But one of the things they are best known for is their Booty Shake Contest, in between sets.  It is 10 minutes of sheer ridiculousness.  They bring girls from the audience on stage to shake their money-makers, awarding the winner with their highly coveted “GOT BACK?” wifebeater.  And if you see someone at the show wearing this, they earned it, as this shirt is not sold at stores.

You can check out Too White Crew at www.toowhitecrew.com, www.myspace.com/toowhitecrew, or on their facebook fan page.  They will be playing Friday June 4th at The Warehouse in Valparaiso, IN.

2 The Rolling Jones

The Rolling Jones
By Courtenay Stewart

The Rolling Jones is all about celebrating the Rolling Stones music. In the half a decade that they have been performing, the Jones has grown into one of the most accurate and best Rolling Stones Tributes anywhere. Those who follow the Jones know it as the premier Rolling Stones Experience! Whether performing in full dress as the Rolling Stones characters or in a more casual setting, the band is able to bring a high-energy show to any audience. And YES, they do perform as a true tribute, Lip Gloss, Glitter, Wigs, and all its Rock N Roll Glory! Each member accurately portrays your favorite Stone, Mick, Keith, Ronny, Charlie, and Billy Wyman for you bass nuts, the likeness is uncanny.

About six years ago, they were hired to play a Halloween show where they had to choose a band to pay tribute to, and picked the Rolling Stones.  All the members were in other bands that were playing about 50 percent of the Stones and it was so much fun that they just continued on.  They made a joke about The Rolling Jones rhyming with The Rolling Stones and it stuck.

There are six members of The Rolling Jones, yes six.  Being able to perform more shows while satisfying many diverse crowds requires there to be two Mick Jaggers.  The members of The Rolling Jones are Mark Rongers as Mick Jagger, Paul Salecker as Mick Jagger, Jeremy Smolen as Keith, Ben Girnus as Ronny, Frank Sakalaris as Bill Wyman, and Scott Tracy as Charlie.

This band usually just pays tribute to The Rolling Stones, however on some nights they will throw in something else from their repertoire.  Exile On Main Street is their favorite album to play off of and their favorite song is Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.  It is a song that Jeremy has to put on the set list at every show or the other members get very angry.

They have had many accomplishments by playing many theatre and festival shows and have recently toured in Wisconsin and Chicago, but one of their favorites was opening for American English (a Beatles tribute band) at a Chicago festival.

The band has a lot of influences, other than the Stones.  They like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and listen to a lot of Blues music.  And their lead singer is a huge fan of The Kinks.

The band’s goal is to get out in the summer to play more festivals and to try and gain more fans.  You can check the band out at www.therollingjones.com to hear their recordings and see videos of their shows.  You can see the band on Saturday May 29th at the Charlie Horse in Munster or on Saturday May 30th at the Tilted Kilt in Merrillville.

3 One More

One More
By: Courtenay Stewart

From classic rock to contemporary or heavy metal to country, One More is a band that plays it all.  When going out to see this band, you can expect to see everything from Pink Floyd to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Megadeath to Pearl Jam, and Lady Antebellum to Kenny Chesney.

Formed in 1997, Rick Hayes had returned from the Army was playing in an all-original band called Lake Effect, when One More got together and started practicing in a little trailer, basically in the middle of nowhere.  They booked their first shows at the Back 40 in Wanatah and the Hanna Hub in Hanna and have been playing live ever since.  The name came from a friend, Greg Morrison from Wanatah.  Greg would walk into a show and no matter how long the guys had been playing, Greg would yell out “One More.”  The name stuck.

One More consists of Rick Hayes:  Lead Singer, Drums, and Psychologist; Marty Hayes:  Bass and Backup Vocals; and Aaron Rogers:  Lead Guitar and Backup Vocals.  Their wide range of music stems from many influences.  Aaron came from an original heavy metal band called Blind Rage, so his influences are Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, like Judas Priest, Megadeath, and Sepultura.  Rick and Marty are very much into Classic Rock, Country, and Contemporary, such as Edwin McCain and Creed.  They each chose songs that they wanted to play and then made a compromise.  They chose music that was easy enough for Rick to sing, but hard enough for Aaron to play.  One More does mostly covers, but there are a couple of originals that they will throw in and these originals have gotten great response.

The band has had a lot of success over the last decade.  They attribute this to the tightness of the band and how they gear themselves.  If the band picks a song and it isn’t tight, then they don’t play it.  Friends and family have also helped with the success of the band.  Without the support of their family and friends as well as the local other bands, especially Easy Street, they wouldn’t be able to do the shows that they are able to do.  They usually team up with Easy Street and play shows together.  If Easy Street books a show, they will bring One More with them and vice versa.  One More has had the opportunity to play Sunset Hills Farm in Valparaiso off of Meridian, where they opened up for Shuddup N Drive to a crowd of approximately 1500 people and played the Valparaiso Harley Davidson 50th Anniversary party to a crowd of 2500 people.

Their upcoming goals are to finally get an album completed which they say has been hard to do with work and family.  And they would like to build a bigger fan base, by getting on a tour bus and expanding to other states in the Midwest, such as Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

You can check out One More at www.myspace.com/1more or see them live on July 10th at Riff Raff’s in Valparaiso, IN.

4 DJ Double - E

In The Mix: DJ Double-E
By: Courtenay Stewart

DJ Double-E aka Eddie Escalante was 16 years old when he got his start DJing.  He was the kid that wanted to be like the radio DJ’s, especially Bad Boy Bill, so he started to save all his money to get some equipment.  “I was on a mission,” said DJ Double-E.   He DJed everything from private parties to weddings until he was old enough to get into the clubs.  However, his big break came at a basement party.

How did you come up with the moniker Double-E?

It comes from my name, since it is Eddie Escalante, I chose the Double E and I have always gone by that name.

What kind of music do you like to listen to and play?

I like to listen to anything that is innovative, basically anything that is outside of the box; such as Electro or any music that has different sounds or different beats.  I am not into the same songs that are played over and over.  I am into more of an appreciation for the artist as opposed to one particular group or sound.  I like to play the music that is similar to what I listen to.  I play the Electro sound everything from Akoi to LMFAO.  I also like to play mash-ups.  It is different, but something people can enjoy with a twist.

What is the best show you have ever done?

I DJed at a large 3-story nightclub, in Australia, that had about 10,000 people there.  I have also done concerts similar to the B96 Bash, but the best of those was one at The Gorge in Washington where I opened for Naughty by Nature.

What are some of your major accomplishments?

Well, my biggest one is serving our country for four years in the Army, but as far as being a dj, it would have to be being on the radio.  I was a radio DJ in Seattle for one year for Y104.9 (KKBY).  I had my own show called In the Mix on Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm-12am.

Who are some of your inspirations?

One would have to be Donald Gauld.  He was a DJ out of Seattle that I met, and when he performs it is more of a show.  He was one of the first DJ’s to mix hip-hop with jungle sounds to make House and Techno music.  He was who gave me the idea to think outside of the box.  I am not one to wait for the correct time to mix.  I mix when it is the correct time.  Another inspiration would have to be Bad Boy Bill.  He created a lot of the scratching hip-hop on House music.

What is on your iPod?

Pretty much everything, but right now I am listening to Dave Matthews Band, Revelation 8:10, and Korn.

What advice would you give to an upcoming DJ?

I think that it is great.  Anyone who has an interest should do it how they want.  I don’t believe that you need to be on turntables and you don’t need to be true to the game.  You just need to know how to step up your game.

DJ Double-E’s main goal is to make DJing an experience and to take you on a journey.  It isn’t about just playing the music.  You can check out DJ Double-E at www.facebook.com/djdoublee or see him at The Warehouse in Valparaiso, IN every Thursday and Saturday.

1 Scott Dubose and the 101 Ranch

SCOTT DUBOSE AND THE 101 RANCH

“This is not your father’s country music, this is ranch rock!”  Scott DuBose is one of the biggest up and coming country/rock singers in the United States.  His music is a blend of everything from rock and rap to country and western and if he had to use words to describe his music, he would call it Ranch Rock.  Country music is his music, but he also grew up listening to Run DMC, Metallica, and the Ramones.  His parents always had music playing throughout the house.  His father is what he would describe as “more than a little bit country,” and his mother was definitely “rock and roll.”  Scott says, “I grew up with a pretty wild mix of music, everything from Merle Haggard to AC/DC and in between.”

Scott got his start when he was very small music has always been a large part of his life. He even has a report card from his first grade teacher, who noted how much he liked to sing, to prove it.  However, he got his professional start on the country music scene in 2003.  He was working as the lead singer in the house band at the show “Tony and Tina’s Wedding”, in Chicago, when he started the 101 Ranch Band.  Scott says, “It was a real trip.  I would do a show at Tony and Tina’s and then run across town to do a show with the Ranch.”

Scott has been extremely lucky with the members in the band.  He is playing with a lot of talent and the band got its start because Scott thinks that good musicians kind of gravitate toward each other and that good players like to work with others who challenge them.  The members of the 101 Ranch Band are Herman Winkler on drums, Mark Madison on keyboards, Pat Lyons on guitar, pedal steel, and mandolin, and David Malatesta on bass.  The band played their first show at a club in West Chicago.  The club, unfortunately, closed last year, but the last band to play there was the New Kids on the Block.

Currently, Scott is working with a great independent label called Sweet Pickle Music and is currently working on his second CD.  His first CD (self-titled) was released in 2008.  Perseverance is what has made Scott and the 101 Ranch so successful.  When starting out country music, in Chicago, was a hard sell however, it has definitely worked in Scott’s favor.  He has had some big accomplishments.  The first is having the freedom to do the music that he wants to do, his way.  The second is having the opportunity to play with some very famous artists such as Gretchen Wilson, Montgomery Gentry, Jason Aldean, Chris Cagle, and Charlie Daniels.  But according to Scott, his biggest accomplishment is “having people like what I do.  That really means the most to me.”

You can check out Scott DuBose and the 101 Ranch on Friday April 9 at The Warehouse in Valparaiso, Indiana.  For more information, check out www.scottdubose.com, www.facebook.com/scottdubose, www.myspace.com/scottdubose, www.digitalrodeo.com/scottdubose.

2 Mike and Joe

Mike and Joe

The original acoustic duo, Mike and Joe began in Bloomington, Indiana and since have become one of the largest drawing cover bands in the Midwest.  They are the epitome of college rock.  Mike and Joe play mostly modern rock/alternative, but will throw in an 80’s tune here and there, and maybe even a Beatles tune from time to time.

Mike and Joe met as undergraduates at Indiana University while living in the Theta Chi fraternity house.  They got their start performing for friends in their fraternity, when one night a friend of theirs signed them up for an open mic night at a local bar, called the Peanut Barrel.  To prepare, they learned about 8 songs while their friends told everyone they knew to come and listen.  A half hour before their set was to begin, the normally half empty bar was filled to capacity and the owner asked them to come back and play on that coming up Friday.  They spent the next three days cramming to learn three hours worth of music.  That Friday led to regular appearances at the bar and the Peanut Barrel launched their music career.

When the bar asked how to bill them in their advertising, Mike and Joe were stumped.  They were not trying to be a band, so had not picked out a name.  Joe came up with the idea of using their first names, which came from an acoustic duo that he used to watch in Pittsburgh.  The name stuck and Mike and Joe were born.

As their popularity grew at Indiana University, word spread to other colleges.  They were soon getting calls from Purdue, University of Illinois and others.  From there, they started playing small clubs in the Chicagoland area, which led to gigs at the Cubby Bear, and some in Indianapolis.  They started playing at a little bar called Club 816 and played there weekly, until the club became too small for their growing fan base.  Now, they play the Vogue in Indianapolis.

By this point they were performing at the top venues in the region and were the first acoustic duo to cross over into mainstream clubs that were usually reserved for “bands” only.  Around this time, they released their first original CD called This Dream and also decided to hold auditions to add two new members to the band.  Bassist Marc Blackwell and drummer Aaron Streich joined the band.

Not wanting to call the full band Mike and Joe, they picked the name Michelanjelo, deciding they would use the two separate names depending on the format of the show, however what they got was a lot of confusion.  It soon became clear that “Mike and Joe” was preferred by their fan base.  In the meantime, they released their second CD, Michelanjelo Live at the Bandstand.  This CD was recorded live and released in conjunction with both Dick Clark’s organization and Anheuser Busch.  The band continued to expand the area that it toured in, discovering Ohio and Iowa, as well as the rest of Illinois and Indiana.

At the end of 2006, bass player Marc decided to leave the band and Cory Flynn walked in, aced the tunes, and joined the band.  Inspired by their new band mate, they started to rethink the way that they were communicating with their fans.  They threw out their original website and rewrote a multimedia site so that their fans could interact with them.  They also reached out through MySpace and Facebook, to be able to chat with their fans in a more personal way.  Then they released three different bootleg CD’s.  They are live, not remixed, nor are they studio recorded.  What the audiences heard those nights is what you hear on the CD.

Today, the band plays year round and is one of the most watched cover bands in the Midwest.  According to the band, “We are now used to playing for terrific, loyal fans, and we truly appreciate those who come to our shows.  The four of us remain committed to entertaining those who have been watching us over the years and attracting new fans to discover our band for the first time.”

Mike and Joe will be rocking many shows this month, but you can catch them on Thursday April 15 at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park, Illinois, Saturday April 17 at the Cubby Bear in Wrigleyville, and Friday April 23 at The Warehouse in Valparaiso, Indiana.  For more information and tour dates, visit www.mikeandjoe.com.

3 Eaten Alive

Eaten Alive

Eaten Alive started as a gathering of musicians, in guitarist and lead singer Shayne Eaton’s basement, six years ago.  In 2004, Mark Snedden (bass, keyboards, and guitar) joined Shayne for their weekly jam sessions.  The group performed at several small clubs throughout the area.  In 2007, Albert Mendoza (guitar) joined and the group officially became Eaten Alive.  At this time, Eaten Alive was performing at benefits and medium size clubs.  In 2008, Robin Hartman joined Eaten Alive and the band’s momentum took off from there.

The name came from a play on words.  Since the lead singer’s last name was Eaton, they decided to change up the spelling and the name Eaten Alive was formed.  They play everything from classic rock to classic country and even throw in music such as the Beatles and some classic movie songs.  They pride themselves on doing radio hits, but those that have not been overplayed.  They want you to sit in the audience and say “wow, I remember this song.”  They chose this type of music because it is what they grew up listening to and is music that they all enjoy.

Eaten Alive focuses on trying to do the best that they can while on stage and making people dance and do things they wouldn’t normally do.  These are just a bunch of family guys with a love and passion for music and performing.

They are a newer band to this area, so one of their biggest accomplishments was playing the Jaycee Fest last year.  They also played the Perch Fest and it went so well that they have been invited back again this year.

For more information, check out www.eatenaliverocks.com.  Eaten Alive will be playing Riff Raff’s in Valparaiso on Saturday April 17, Leroy’s in Porter on Friday April 23, and Marko’s on Friday April 30.

4 Afrodisiacs

Afrodisiacs

The “Afros” are far from your typical dance band.  Their powerful, high energy show explodes with funky costumes, style and an attitude that leaves audiences astonished and overwhelmed.

On the back roads of nowhere Kansas, way back in the 70’s, all four members were running late trying to get to separate gigs.  While speeding through the cornfields, they all ran the same four way intersection and collided into a heap of steel, rubber, and smoke.  They all got out of their cars yelling at each other when they suddenly realized that they all had the same tune blaring on their radios.  While waiting for hours for someone to drive by, they became the best of friends and decided to start their own band.  Thus The Afrodisiacs were born.

They chose Afrodisiacs, because aphrodisiac means “arousing sexual desire” and that is exactly what they do, but only with afros.  Their electrifying show propels you into the groove, complete with the style, costumes, and dance moves of the 70’s.  The band is comprised of Bonesy Malone on drums, Sugar Jackson on vocals, Vinnie Bagadonuts on bass, and Stash MaJunk on guitar.

The Afros add a unique dimension to their performance, demonstrating the common ties between 70’s Disco and today’s popular music.  Along with their brothers in Los Angeles, the Boogie Nights, their professional, energetic, humorous, and magnetic style has defined them as America’s number one Disco Tribute.

They have shared the stage with artists such as Lionel Richie, KC and the Sunshine Band, Kool and the Gang, and have appeared on national shows such as Jenny Jones and Mancow.  The Afrodisiacs will be one of the most memorable shows you will ever attend.

The Afros are available for all types of parties and private events, from birthdays and weddings to large corporate events.  For more information, check out www.myspace.com/chicagoafrodisiacs.  The Afrodisiacs will be playing It’s Vegas Baby at the Blue Chip Casino on Saturday April 10th.

1 Trippin Billies

Trippin Billies

By: Courtenay Stewart

Long ago an acoustic duo started playing in a small Irish

pub in Chicago. Who would ever know that it would turn

into one of the largest nationally touring tribute bands in

the United States. Their talent coupled with their love of

performance has moved them above the bar band circuit

and into concert settings. This is not just another Dave

Matthews cover band. This is THE tribute band. If you

enjoy Dave Matthews, this is the band for you. As close

as you can get to the real thing, but at a more reasonable

price and much closer to home.

Trippin Billies started in the mid nineties doing their first

gig at an Irish pub in Chicago, Illinois called Durkin’s. It

was a pretty small bar that would have acoustic acts

perform during the week. They started as a duo and were

playing about fifty percent Dave Matthews, but the crowd

started growing larger every week and the patrons wanted

more. The band loved Dave Matthews because it was a

great fit for them. It was the music they loved, therefore

they loved playing it, and of course the fans loved every

minute of it. Bill Denny (guitarist for the band), stated

“It’s nice to emulate an artist that like minded people can

get behind, you know, actually play music you enjoy in

nice places in front of a lot of people. It makes it good

times had by all.” When they started adding people to the

band to be able to fill out the Dave sound, the whole band

would be packed in this tiny corner with no stage. The

guys would actually have to get on the bar during their

solos to be seen.

Trippin Billies consists of six members. The singer or

“Our Dave” as they like to call it is Chris Grant, Jason

Vinluan is the violinist, Kelsey Tarver on drums, Marvin

Little on bass, Steve Schnall on sax and keyboards, and

Bill Denny on lead guitar and keyboards.

I asked the band, how they came up with Trippin Billies,

especially since Dave Matthews has so many incredible

songs. It actually was a pretty easy choice although

it didn’t come without a bit of contention. When they

became more popular, they decided to get a website,

however were contacted by another band with the same

name out of New York. They eventually were able to

keep the name, but the funniest thing is, it wasn’t because

of the song, it was because original member Bill Denny is

called Billy.

The band has become so popular because of their

authenticity to Dave Matthews. They try extremely hard

to emulate him and give the fans the show that they came

to see. It also helps that they do their own booking, so it

is not a super aggressive approach and they are able to

go where there is demand. Their packed shows have led

to word of mouth spreading from one town to the next. It

also helps when you can pack large venues, such as the

House of Blues.

The band has had many accomplishments and many

firsts. They have played from coast to coast and feel

very accomplished when they are able to sell out a

large venue in a new city. They also enjoy being able to

rejuvenate markets that have fallen off a bit by reinventing

themselves and pushing the envelope. They were

featured in the national music publication Relix in an

article about the nation’s top tribute bands and they were

featured with some pretty massive bands.

One of their major accomplishments was that they were

asked to play on the infamous boat on the Chicago River

in a promotion to alleviate some of the tension. Dave

Matthews was about to play in Chicago for the first time

after the “tour bus river boat incident.” It was broadcasted

live on a popular radio station and was covered by every

major affiliate from NBC to CBS and got picked up as a

snippet on the national news. This concert was at 8am

in the morning, so imagine everyone walking to work in

the loop stopping to watch a hundred people dancing on

top of a boat drinking margaritas. They have been in a

couple books about the Dave Matthews band. However,

their biggest accomplishment by far is simply the

longevity of the band. There are so many other tributes

out there and so many just to the Dave Matthews Band,

that the band takes great pride when a venue calls and

says, “Oops, I hired the wrong one, how soon can you get

here.”

Whether you are seeing Trippin Billies at a packed show

at the House of Blues or at a packed show at your smaller

neighborhood bar, their show is as great as the real

thing. For those of you who missed their last local show

or prefer something a bit more intimate than a sold out

theatre or the street festivals that are about to begin, the

guys will be playing at the Tequila Roadhouse in Alsip,

Illinois on Saturday March 6 and Northwood’s in St. John,

Indiana on Saturday March 13. For more information

about the band, check out www.trippinbillies.com.

2 Ideamen

Ideamen

By: Courtenay Stewart

What started long ago as two bands from the region, Soulvasq and

Duct Tape Mustache, has now morphed into a more accessible

yet, experimental genre blending band, known as Ideamen.

Ideamen is a pop/rock/alternative band with an experimental

sound that hails from the south side of Chicago. They are

pushing the boundaries of rock and creating music that is ahead of

its time by combining piano pop with modern rock and metal.

Both bands had shared influences such as Mr. Bungle, System of

a Down, Ben Folds, and Queen and they had occasionally shared

a stage. Together they created their own unique sound with dual

lead vocals, a strong keyboard presence, and four part vocal

harmonies, which has become their trademark.

Ideamen performs both originals and covers, but for their covers

they do something no one else in the region is doing; they are

blending songs from different genres into. It isn’t strange to hear

this band playing a Pantera song and singing Tori Amos lyrics over

it. They do this in part to never being able to agree on anything

and also as a way to help make their live show unique and

entertaining.

This band takes a lot of pride in the fact that they are an

experimental band although they feel that it is sort of a misnomer

(in that the music is structured and delivered as if they were

bubble gum pop tunes). The band was asked how they came up

with this type of music and their response was that “they cannot

help what kind of music they write. It is just what comes out and

reflects all the different influences and styles of music that the

members share.”

The name Ideamen came from a play on words. The wanted

to call the band “Thought Criminals”, however the name was

taken. They decided to stay on the same track as it went with

the lyrics that they wrote, but also they wanted to pay homage to

the great thinkers of the world, such as Leonardo Da Vinci and

Albert Einstein. Turns out that the moniker “Idea Men” is shared

by a now defunct hardcore band from Philadelphia, a comic book

company in Detroit, a comedy troupe in Hollywood, a consulting

firm in Illinois, villains from the cartoon “The Tick” and the list

actually goes on and on. They justify keeping the name because

they are currently the only band using it. Trademark funds are

being raised!

The band got their start in 2006 by recording a five song CD called

Progress. They took a break when their keyboardist went on tour

with a Baltimore band called Dog Fashion Disco. This led to a

wide fan base as the fans wanted to hear the other band that the

keyboardist was in and word of mouth spread. They sold this CD

in approximately 18 countries and booked their first show at the

Double Door in Chicago, Illinois. They haven’t looked back since

and are continually trying to grow the band.

The band is comprised of Mark Vasquez on Bass, Tim Swanson

on Keyboards and who also writes a lot of the music for the band,

Dave Solar on Vocals and also the Lyricist for the band, Dan

Figurell on Guitar, and Phil Goodrich on Drums.

Ideamen got picked up by Rotten Records, an independent record

label out of Los Angeles. On October 27, 2009, the band released

their second major release titled “May You Live In Interesting

Times”. 2010 promises to be the best opportunity for Ideamen

to reach a new plateau. Their full length album is a bold musical

statement, blending alt rock, progressive metal, and mainstream

pop with deep lyrical overtones about the semi-dismal state of

the world today. This album was based on a Chinese curse also

known as “may you find what you are looking for”. There is a high

popularization and usage for this saying, even being used in the

Day of Affirmation Address by Robert F. Kennedy in 1966. The

band chose this because in the lyrics, the CD reveals a lot about

the times that we live in now; that these times might not be the

greatest, but they are definitely very interesting. This is a definite

lyrical theme throughout the CD.

Despite the albums dark concept, Ideamen have a lot of great

things going on at the moment, especially in March. They are

showcasing at South by Southwest this year on Saturday March

20 at Lucky Lounge in Austin, Texas. They will be on tour for

almost an entire month from March 10 until April 4. The 21 show

tour in 24 days visiting 14 states will kick off with their first show

at the Melody Inn in Indianapolis on Wednesday March 10. They

will also be around the area on Thursday March 11, when they will

be playing at Columbia Street West in Fort Wayne and again on

Saturday March 13 at Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago, Illinois.

Ideamen bassist Mark Vasquez on their label Rotten Records

stated, “Rotten Records has been amazing to us. We had initially

received some flack about signing with some of our peers. So far,

signing with the label has probably been the best decision that the

band has ever made. Rotten Records has helped us empower

ourselves and worldwide distribution through Sony doesn’t hurt

either. We have been able to commit ourselves to be a touring

band and we have been able to reach people and industry outlets

that would have probably ignored an unsigned band. Our fairly

new band playing at South by Southwest is a shining example of

that.”Vasquez stated that on touring, “It is great, but it certainly

doesn’t come without making personal sacrifices. Some of us

have given up our personal lives, right down to having to live with

your parents or taking an otherwise undesirable odd job just to

make it possible to get out on the road.” However, this does not

discourage the band; instead they see it as a rite of passage.

Aside from having the label support, Ideamen is completely D.I.Y.

If you buy their CD directly from iloveideamen.com, they hand

package and personally mail the album as well as printing their

own shirts, create their own artwork, and produce their own music

with the help of “sixth member” Chris Gardner, who co-produces

their music and plays guitar on their tours.

You can purchase their new album in any of the 39 CIMS

(Coalition of Indie Music Stores) across the nation as well as

through any online retailer including Sony. But you will currently

only find the upcoming 7 inch split with Polkadot Cadaver (formerly

Dog Fashion Disco) while on their tour.

band, and their newly released CD at www.iloveideamen.com,

3 Denyal

Denyal

By: Courtenay Stewart

If you like music that breaks convention, tears

down walls, and incorporates new and innovative

elements, then Denyal is a band that you will love.

Years ago, this band was formed in a basement

when four musicians came together, with their

different musical influences, they decided to

violate borders and came up with a new concept

of metal music. Denyal is known as an original,

aggressive, emotional metal band from NW

Indiana and the Chicagoland areas. Denyal had

their first CD release party Saturday February 13

at Riff Raff’s bar in Valparaiso, IN. Playing to an

almost sold out crowd, their first show since being

in the studio was a great success.

The band consists of four members. Heath

Rogers on bass and vocals, Jeremy King on

drums, Ron Tomich on guitar and backup vocals,

and Justin Mayberry on guitar and backup vocals.

The band got their start when Heath and Jeremy

got together in 2000. They soon started jamming

with Ron, and Justin filled out the rest of the band.

They have been going strong for two years with

this lineup.

They all had different influences and liked all

different genres of music. They decided to start

writing their own music and the original sound

just seemed to flow. The name came almost by

accident. The band got their first show and didn’t

have a name, so they came up with “Denyal”, but

were planning on changing it after that first show.

Their first show did so well and the band gained so

much popularity that they stuck with it.

Their new release, called Scarred For Life is

a CD that is breaking the barriers of metal.

It has an avant-garde sound to it; almost

a new school meets classic heavy metal,

what would be described as hybrid metal.

Hybrid Metal is a sound that is collected

from diverse styles of music, anything from

hardcore metal to jazz, and has lyrics that

can be philosophical and emotional in

nature. This is a perfect fit, for this band. Their

sound features a lot of the great classic sounds,

such as Metallica and Pantera, but you can tell

that the band is also influenced from different

types of music, everything from Muddvain to Rush.

All the while keeping their original sound. The

lyrics, you can tell, are from real life situations

and have a very emotional feel to them. This CD

was a major accomplishment for the band. They

made it in Heath’s basement and did everything

themselves. They had to take all the little things

that you normally don’t hear live and change them,

since everything sticks out in the studio, which has

made them a better and much tighter band.

The band’s goal with this CD is to spread the word

about themselves and to possibly expand not only

in Northwest Indiana, but also to different regions,

markets, and whatever else may come. Therefore

they are sending their CD to many different labels

and management groups around the United

States. The band will continue to write and put

together a new album, but they are also in the

middle of putting together a tour of the Midwest.

As of now, there is no confirmation, so you will

have to check out their websites to find out where

Denyal will be playing next.

You can check out Denyal at www.myspace.

com/denyalmusic or www.reverbnation/denyal.

Both websites feature a history of the band and

allow you to check out songs from their new CD,

Scarred For Life.

4 In The Mix: DJ Luis Ruiz

DJ Luis Ruiz

By Mona Dickinson

A love for music has kept DJ and event promoter Luis Ruiz

right in the mix in Northwest Indiana.

Ruiz owns and operates Jam Trax along with his wife,

Michelle. He goes by the name of DJ Jammin’ Luis Ruiz, in

the music business. He hails from the Indiana Harbor and

starting DJing in 1987.

“My friend Jessie Jammin’ Morales was my mentor,” Ruiz says

of his start in the business. “Ever since I heard the Hot Mix

Five, I fell in love with the world of mixing.”

Though he doesn’t work the club scene much any more, Ruiz

is active in promoting events in Northwest Indiana and the

greater Chicago land region. Currently, he is in the process

along with two other partners in organizing a car show and

concert - the Chicago Super Show with Streetlow Magazine at

Soldier Field on August 15, 2010.

His work as a promoter also ranks in the business.

“I was one of the first people to bring radio personalities

from Chicago such as Bad Boy Bill and many other artists to

Indiana for dances,” notes Ruiz.

One of his favorite memories dates back to 1987, when he

packed the Hammond Armory with about 800 people who all

came to see Bad Boy Bill and Julian Jumpin Perez, along with

his DJ crew, the Indiana Terror Team.

These days, you’ll find Jam Trax at private events, weddings

and other special occasions. As a bi-lingual DJ, Ruiz and his

wife specialize in parties and events with diverse crowds.

“Everyone knows how good entertainment either makes or

breaks the event and we specialize in working with the client

to provide the best entertainment at their event,” Ruiz said.

“We cover every musical taste from A to Z and will keep the

crowd on their feet all night long, making sure the guests have

fun.”

According to his website (www.jamtraxdj.com), “The only

problem you may encounter is trying to pull your guest away

from the dance floor.”

Luis and Michelle specialize is various styles of music and

keep up to date on the all the latest music in both English and

Spanish, as well as covering all genres – traditional, oldies,

pop, and country, literally something for everyone.

“To really get the party going, I can Hot Mix to give the party

a true club atmosphere,” adds Ruiz. He says that over the

years, he has learned to read a crowd and know what will

keep them up and dancing.

What also sets Jam Trax aside from other DJ’s, is that the pair

works together as a team, to provide the best service for any

occasion no matter how small or large.

“I play the music and Michelle helps to organize things

throughout the night, to stay on schedule,” Ruiz said. “She

makes announcements and introductions. We find that brides

really appreciate this specialized attention.”

Over 60,000 songs are available on site, and special songs or

requests can also be downloaded in seconds, Ruiz said.

“We are true music lovers, so we are very familiar with all the

styles,” added Ruiz. “We cover everything from the Big Band

Era to Jazz, R&B, Motown, Disco, 80’s, Alternative, Top 40,

Country and even Spanish music.”

Technology has really changed the dj scene it has made it

way easier to become a dj. It used to take a lot of dedication

and skill to learn the trade. It was also a lot more expensive

having to buy all those records. Now I am a Serato dj

spinning on CDJ’s.

Ruiz says he loves to look out over the crowd and see the

dance floor packed and the crowd getting into the music. On

the flip side, hauling the equipment in and out of places is the

only bad part about the business.

When he’s not mixing, Ruiz is a supervisor in the No. 4 BOF,

at ArcelorMittal, in the Indiana Harbor. He is into Lowriding,

and belongs to the Together Car Club from Chicago, which is

affiliated with the L.A. Chapter.

“I love mixing, but when I’m cruising in my ride, I listen to my

oldies because oldies are forever,” added Ruiz. His pride and

joy is a restored 1948 Chevy Fleetline named Cholow.

1 NWI Music: Headbanger's Ball

Hairbanger’s Ball

WE WANT TO ROCK

BY Courtenay Stewart

If there is one band that has the energy of the nostalgic 80’s hair bands, then Hairbanger’s Ball (HBB) is it. They are not another knock off cover or tribute band that is struggling to keep a decade alive. They are the embodiment of this decade. If you grew up listening to the hair bands with the bandanas, big hair and eyeliner, this is the show for you. Billed as the biggest rock show party band on the road today, HBB does an amazing job recreating the music and appearances of the bands that ruled what is now known as the decade of decadence.

In the 80’s, we were teasing our hair, wearing acid washed jeans, and listening to bands such as Poison and Bon Jovi top the charts but when the 80’s were over, we were left with only memories of the hair rock that we grew to love. Based in Chicago, HBB got its start ten years ago when Jeff Jackson and Polly Pantz were playing in an alternative band together. The concept of HBB was written on a bar napkin, but their pure love for the 80’s hair rock is what started this whole process. They took the name from an old MTV show that was on at the time called Headbanger’s Ball. It was similar in theme, so they decided to twist the name around with respect to what is known as the hair decade and came up with Hairbanger’s Ball.  What started as a passion with history has turned into a living. They thought that the 80’s was some of the best music that had ever been done and they loved the style that went along with it, so they decided to put together a set list of classic hair rock and got a large bar in Chicago (Joe’s on Weed St.) to book them.  Their first show was completely sold out.  For the last ten years they have crossed the country, even touring overseas, however now they have decided to stay primarily in the Midwest. Though 80’s music is how they got their start, the band has evolved and now throws some current rock music into their lineup as well. This came from the tours of the Midwest colleges and wanting to keep the show fresh for the younger fans that they were acquiring. This show is definitely not just about 80’s music, but more about the passion and love for what they do, as well as for their fans.

When asked what the reasoning behind their success was, Jeff Jackson stated, “We were lucky to have the support of a lot of different clubs and radio stations, but we couldn’t have done it without our fans.” And he is right; their shows have been selling out for the last decade. But to an outsider, that is not the only reason for their success. HBB is easily in the top three busiest cover bands in the United States. Not only have they played all over the country, but they were also chosen to be part of an Armed Forces tour. They felt that it was a great honor to be able to bring a piece of home and America overseas to the troops.  HBB consists of eight members, Polly Pantz on Lead Vocals and Keyboards, Tyler Steven on Lead Vocals and Acoustic Guitar, Scotty Von Blazin on Lead Vocals, Sean Jovi on Bass, Bobby Bones on Lead Guitar, Jeff Jackson on Lead Guitar, and the two newest members of the group, “The Kid” on Drums, and Gina Simmons on Backup Vocals and Keyboards.  If you have seen this show then you will agree, HBB looks and sounds just as good as the original recording artists themselves. Whether you want to hear Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Warrant, Motley Crue, Skid Row, or any of the rest of the Headbanger’s Hall of Fame, HBB gives you the best of it all.

Sounds of the songs from Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue, and many more will be filling the Warehouse in Valparaiso on Friday March 5th.

2 NWI Music: X-Girlfriend

X-Girlfriend -

Chick RockWith Attitude

 By: Mario Bourzac

Plenty of bands talk the talk when it comes to crowd entertainment, but few can truly walk the walk. Rather than simply existing as a collection of musicians playing together on stage, it should be the goal of any cover band to become a cohesive musical package. In order to do that you need not only the musical know how, but the theatrical know how as well.

Local musician Rik Menconi thought in much the same way when he was putting together his new cover band just under 7 years ago.  When recruiting a lead vocalist for the group he looked at not only fellow local musicians, but at local actors and actresses as well, with the clear advantage being that a local thespian would have the stage presence he was looking for. Once he found his new singer, he knew he was on to something great.  Originally forming back in 2003, the cover band X-Girlfriend first came together when bassist Rik Menconi recruited local actress Tina Dohl as his lead vocalist. With over a decade of stage experience already under her belt, Tina was more than up to the task Rik had in mind. As if to confirm his expectations, Tina had already won the 2002 Best Principal Actress in a Musical Award, for her portrayal of Velma Kelly in “Chicago”, at the Memorial Opera House. Despite her lack of experience in the context of a rock band, she was the perfect fit for X-Girlfriend.

The rest of the original line up was filled out by Colin Peterson on lead guitar and John Wachter on drums.  However, as with most bands, X-Girlfriend did experience a few personnel changes as the years went on. In January of 2007 Larry “The Rev” Roberts, also of November’s Doom, took over on lead guitar due to Colin Peterson’s “changing family obligations” said Menconi. Later in May that same year Vern Cranor, formerly of Jump In The Dumpster, Sadie’s Cage, and Nawty, took over on drums when John Wachter moved out of state.

With their new line up, X Girlfriend has been achieving some of their biggest goals to date. In 2008 they played at The Radisson’s Annual New Year’s Eve Bash to a room of just under 1,000 people which was possibly their largest crowd to date. That, along with the numerous awards they have received in the NWI music scene over the years, including Favorite Cover Band, Favorite Female Vocalist, and Favorite Lead Guitarist, has helped them reach those goals.  It is worth noting, however, that in their almost 7 years of existence, there have been only two member changes in their line up. And now they are more dedicated than ever.  Coming up this month X-Girlfriend will be playing the Stadium Bar and Grill in Dyer, IN on Friday February 5th; the Double Deuce in Manhattan, IL on Saturday February 6th; and perhaps most notably at the Risqué Café in Downtown Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood for their Anti-Valentine’s Day party on Saturday February 13th. For more information on the Anti-Valentine’s Day show you can contact the bar through their website at www.risquechicago.com.  In addition to their already noteworthy upcoming gigs, X-Girlfriend is also more than excited for their upcoming annual celebration - Rik’s Annual Birthday Bash. Ever since Rik became involved with local music he has always celebrated his birthday with a B-Day Bash Show which in the past has always provided a great turnout. And this year will be no different. In fact, this year he is lucky enough to be celebrating his birthday twice.

Along with X-Girlfriend he will be hosting his birthday locally at The Stadium Bar and Grill in Dyer, IN on Friday March 12th, for his friends and family. On the weekend prior to that, Saturday March 6th, he will also be hosting his annual B-Day Bash at Czar’s 505 in St. Joseph, MI, where X-Girlfriend has an amazing following and their fans have become like a second family to the band.

With all of their upcoming shows for this year already set in place, X-Girlfriend is more than excited to be playing live music. For more information on where you can catch them, check them out on line at www.xgirlfriendband.com.

3 NWI Music: Mellencougar: Check it Out

Mellencougar: Check It Out

By: Mario Bourzac

It’s not everyday that a person gets to live out one of the biggest dreams. All too often it seems a great deal of people go their whole lives never knowing what it’s like to reach their long desired goals. But that only makes those who do achieve them that much more remarkable.

One such man is Chicago’s own Don Wilson.  Currently living out his dream of performing his favorite John Cougar Mellencamp songs, live on stage, Don Wilson is the lead singer for Mellencougar, one of the country’s most authentic John Cougar Mellencamp tribute bands.  Having not only received the blessing from the man himself, Mellencougar also features several previous members of the JCM’s own backing band. That experience, plus their genuine love of the material, has made them a devastatingly accurate tribute band.

Over the course of the last four years Mellencougar has been belting out their favorite and most often requested JCM tunes at venues throughout the Midwest. While their performances have garnered them a fair amount of notoriety, it wasn’t always this way. For a band that originally started on a whim, they have come quite a long way in a relatively short period of time.  “In 2006 I was singing Pink Houses at a bar with karaoke [when] my friend John Perry heard me and said I sounded just like John Mellencamp, and that I should start a tribute band to him,” lead singer Don Wilson said of the band’s humble origins.

Without thinking too much of his friend’s suggestion, Don graciously accepted the compliment, but blew off the idea of ever becoming a singer. His friend, however, had other ideas.  “He persisted and six months later I was singing at the House of Blues in Chicago with no formal experience of being in a band, let alone singing,” Wilson later admitted.  But it is these same simple beginnings that keep the band so close to the spirit of the music. Much like JCM himself, Mellencougar has come from a modest background and developed through a love of the music.

In addition to their similar backgrounds, Mellencougar also shares a few other key connections with JCM. Those connections come in the form of two band members, bassist/guitarist Toby Myers and keyboard player Moe Z M.D. Both Toby and Moe spent a significant amount of time in JCM’s backing band before becoming permanent members of Mellencougar.  “In July ‘09 I was contacted by Toby Myers who was John Mellencamp’s bass player from 1982 to 2000 to sing at his birthday,” Wilson said. “We hit it off and I decided to make Mellencougar even more authentic when Toby and Moe Z M.D, another JCM former band member (1995 to 2003), told me they wanted in.”

As a lifelong fan of JCM, these new additions were without a doubt a monumental moment for Wilson.  “I remember coming out of the bridge on the song ‘Check It Out’” Wilson said of one of the first shows with the new members. “I look over and see Moe and Toby singing and thinking ‘This is the best seat I’ve ever had.’” Rounded out by Robert Dubin on drums, Susan Rudney on violin, Howard Rudney on lead guitar, and Tom Kief on bass, Mellencougar is now more legitimate than ever.  Despite their obvious love for the music of JCM, as well as the collective talents of the band, being in a tribute band still provides them with some unique experiences that the original just doesn’t get. And after one particularly riotous show, Don experienced one of these truly unique moments.  “A drunk guy slurred as he asked for my autograph and told me ‘Jack and Diane’ was the best thing I’ve ever done,” Wilson said. “I signed his shirt Don Wilson and said I had to catch the bus.”

He then added, “I get the feeling he wasn’t that happy about his shirt when he sobered up and could read.” Coming up this month, you can catch Mellencougar performing at Northwoods 8101 US Rt. 41 in St. John, IN.  on Saturday, February 6th. Tickets are currently available at Northwoods or on line at www.northwoodsdining.com.  For more information on Mellencougar, including upcoming performances, you can check them out on line at www.mellencougar.net.

4 In The Mix: DJ Sean Perry

DJ Sean Perry

 By Mona Dickinson

With today’s technology, not many DJ’s have spun discs, let alone touched vinyl. DJ Spin – a.k.a. Sean Perry – is an exception to this rule.

Currently deejaying at Roxxy’s on U.S. 12 in Miller, Perry grew up in a family that was into the music scene. Born in Gary, he lived in Brunswick then moved to Merrillville in 1986.

“My father was a DJ and I can remember my brother setting up his equipment in the back yard in the summer and just rocking,” Perry said. “I was just 5 or 6, but I was amazed and I truly loved it – Kurtis Blow, Sugarhill Gang, Parliament, etc.”

As he got older, his brother let him touch the equipment and try his hand at deejaying.

“I really didn’t know what I was doing, but it was a good thing because it got me familiar on what a mixer was and the turntable,” recalled Perry. When his brother moved away and pursued other interests, Perry lost touch until he met good friend Rudy Sanchez (rest in peace.)

“That’s when I really started deejaying and took it seriously,” said Perry. “I learned how to match beats and it just took off from there.”

Perry moved to the San Francisco Bay area in the early 1990’s – and while he was out there, he learned a lot from the DJ’s of the day – who were so much more advanced. It was during that time that he learned to “scratch” with the best of them and tighten up his skills.

One of his career highlights was a night in San Francisco when DJ Q Bert tapped him on the shoulder and said, “Man, you’re jamming.” Another one of his favorite moments was a scratch session with Q Bert, Flare, Mix Master Mike and DJ Disc.

“I think that’s what really separates me from DJ’s here in Northwest Indiana,” Perry explained. “I’ve seen some of the best straight up battles, and had scratch sessions with some of the best in the business.”

Perry was also influenced from DJ’s on the radio back in the day, including Bad Boy Bill, who was hot in Chicago.  “I’m a Bad Boy Bill fan to this day and I used to think that Scratch Bill was tight till I hooked up with some other DJ’s out there (on the West coast),” Perry said. “Eventually, I stepped up my skills from just being in that atmosphere.” Perry says he took a break from the club scene after the art of deejaying changed from what it used to be in the 80’s and 90’s. But now he’s back in the mix, combining his old school art with what’s hot in music today.

He does his homework and mixes songs off the original albums. Perry says that also sets him apart from others. Perry says he likes expressing himself through the music he plays and how he mixes it.

“I love old school hip hop and R & B, and some of the new hip hop is ok,” Perry added. “I also listen to a little rock such as System of a Down, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Sublime and P.O.D.”

The main thing is to keep the people out on the floor and having a good time, according to Perry.  “Its how you deliver the music and that comes with being a great mixer,” said Perry. “And once they see that you’re playing hit after hit and you keep the energy flowing, you keep people dancing and having a good time.” Perry says that the DJ scene has changed a lot with technology making it easier to become a DJ and many people just want to be a DJ cause they think they will look cool doing it.

“Many of these DJ’s today don’t even know how the art came to be or who put it on the map,” Perry said.  Employed as a local truck driver during the day, Perry says he is a big sports fan and follows the Bears and Bulls in his spare time.

“I keep up with the latest changes by keeping up on what’s hot in today’s music scene,” he said. “Basically, I’m running the tractor for my music and I practice when I get a chance.” You can check out DJ Spin every Friday and Saturday night at Roxxy’s, 5705 Dunes Highway, Gary (Miller). The bar can be reached at (219) 588-7190.

5 NWI Music: History's End

A NEW CHAPTER IN HISTORY

History’s End

BY: Courtenay Stewart

The party rock band, History’s End has enjoyed continued success throughout the region for the last decade. What originally started as an all-original act quickly grew into the largest cover band in the area.  History’s End is the quintessential cover band. Whether they are performing at the top festivals, the hippest clubs, or your wedding, they are a band that you never forget.  Now, with a new lead singer (Taylor Garrison), History’s End is taking the Midwest by storm.

When Mark Smith decided to retire, the band was definitely going to have a hard time replacing the former lead singer. About finding someone new, Phil Carmen stated, “It was extremely hard. Mark was such a big part of the band and we felt it would be too hard for a guy to fill his shoes, so we decided to go into a completely different direction.” Taylor seemed to almost fall into the position as the new lead singer for History’s End.  According to Phil Reiner, “She had been out to some shows and we had let her come up to sing a few songs.”

Taylor sounded so great while doing guest appearances with the band that making her the lead singer seemed like the perfect avenue. Taylor started singing at the age of 3 (her dad is also a musician). She continued with it, doing theatre from the age of 12 through high school. At the age of 18, she started with a band called Déjà Vu out of Lake Zurich, Illinois and played with them for 5 or 6 years.  After that, she met up with History’s End guitar player Aaron Harris and together they started doing acoustic shows in the area, where she joined up with the local band Lil’ Betty Ford.

During this time, she had started coming out to see the band and got to know them. In April of 2009 Mark announced his retirement and Taylor started in August. Taylor stated, “What drew her to the band was that she had such a good time when she would come out.” What drew the band to Taylor was that she was able to dance and let loose making her the most obvious choice for this band, whose bottom line seems to be simply having fun.

Due to Mark’s significant and unique stage presence, Taylor was apprehensive to take over the lead role, however her strong voice and personality has started to take History’s End to new heights. Since joining the band in August, History’s End has had continued success due to their “something for everyone” show. Their success is drawn not only from their eclectic and diverse choice of music which not only spans different decades, but different genres as well, but they also use samples to make the music more authentic.  However, the band plays with such a collaborative effort that without each individual, History’s End just wouldn’t be History’s End. In addition to Taylor on lead vocals, the band is comprised of Aaron Harris on Guitar, Rich Melton on Guitar and Samples, Chris Kurtis on Keyboards, Phil Carmen on Drums, and Phil Reiner on Bass.

The band is continuing their shows in the region, which has made them what they are today, and because of the Ham Vegas fan base, the band has now been getting offers to play bigger places outside of their current market and they are now hoping to expand Ham Vegas to new places. But luckily for the loyal Ham Vegas fans, things haven’t changed too much. The band still adds new music and always tries to keep their show fresh, but when coming out to a show, the jokes and antics never stop as well as the cherry bombs.

If you haven’t seen History’s End, I definitely recommend going to one of their shows. Whether you are looking to dance or to rock, or wanting to listen to the newest top 40 or even the appealing classics, History’s End has it all, drunken debauchery included. They are the epitome of a good time and are definitely one show unlike any other.  You can check them out on Saturday February 13 at Northwoods in St.  John or on Friday February 26 at The Warehouse in Valparaiso.

1 NWI Music: The Greys

The Greys

By: Mario Bourzac

Rock and roll is, arguably, one of the most popular genres of music to come out of the last century. And like anything once popular, it has since splintered into a number of different sub-genres. From post-experimental electric cello rock to industrial rock noir, everything seems to fit under the rock and roll umbrella.

Carrying the banner for the modern day’s folk-rock crowd is Highland, Indiana’s The Greys. This local quartet has only been together for a little over two years, but in that time they have already managed to amass a loyal following. With any luck, in the new year they will only see those numbers grow.

Originally forming in late 2006, The Greys hadn’t initially planned on staying together for too long.

“Our first gig [March 2007] was also supposed to be our last as Josh was set to move to Florida,” explained Gary Carstensen, one of the groups many multi-instrumentalists.

After said first show, it had appeared that the band was immediately finished, but that was not to be.

“For the next four months while he was there we were on hiatus,” stated fellow band member and multi-instrumentalist Joel Novak.  “Luckily he came back and we resumed our creative endeavors.” Then, in the summer of 2007 The Greys, rounded out by Eric Antczak and the rolling stone Joshua Eastland, officially began their illustrious career.

But it wasn’t all as easy as it sounds. Before the talented quartet began performing together, they had almost all been busy playing in other groups. The ‘core’ of the band, as it were, is made up of the two founding members: Gary and Eric.

Prior to laying the groundwork for what would eventually become The Greys, Gary and Eric had played together in several different bands throughout their late teen years and into their early 20’s. While none of their previous groups made it very far, their experience playing together helped form the musical bond they now share in The Greys.  During Gary and Eric’s formative music years, another future member of the band was also busy playing in bands of his own. As the only other member of The Greys who plays drums, Josh had spent his early musical excursions playing drums in several different local bands. When the last one finally called it a day in 2006 he began exploring other options.

Amidst his exploring, Josh was introduced to Eric and Gary through what Gary refers to as “a mutual enemy.”

“This mutual antagonist we speak of encouraged me to befriend these hooligans as they, in his words, ‘Listened to nothing but Dylan and the White Stripes.’” Josh said.

After this chance encounter, it seemed the trio was already firmly set in place, but the group was still not complete. Just as Eric, Gary, and Josh began playing together, Eric and Gary’s longtime friend Joel had begun playing bass guitar. Once they found out, they knew Joel would be a perfect fit for the band.

“Being our closest cohort, there was always an unspoken invitation for Joel to join our ranks” Eric said, explaining their mutually understood agreement, “as soon as he deemed himself proficient enough.” From there, the group set their sights on playing shows and experienced their first set back when Josh left for Florida. But upon his return home the following summer, The Greys happily resumed working together.

Currently The Greys are taking it easy in anticipation of the next upcoming performance, scheduled for the end of February. On Saturday February 27th they will be playing a benefit concert at Purdue Calumet to raise money and collect basic living goods for the victims of the typhoons and floodings that occurred this autumn in the Philippines.

As a member of the Social Justice Club, the organization who will be coordinating the event, Joel Novak is very passionate about the cause.

“Since there has been, in my opinion at least, an inadequate amount of media attention directed towards the tragedies there, the show will serve to promote awareness of the situation as well,” he said.  Along with a performance from The Greys, the show will also feature two other area bands, as well as poetry and selections from other fraternities and student organizations on campus.  Following the benefit show, The Greys will no doubt be looking to fill their performance schedule as the summer draws near. 2 NWI Music: Day After Dinosaur - Science Fiction

Day After Dinosaur –

Science Fiction

By Adam Hazlett

I was about to learn one of the most important lessons a writer can ever be taught: Friends and “impartial criticism” do NOT mix.

After my first listen to Day After Dinosaur’s second EP Science Fiction I was afraid I was going to have to face down a very difficult decision. Do I risk insulting a friend and say what I “really” think about this record, or do I just write something nice and praising? DAD drummer Jason Summerhill and I go back a number of years and the last thing I wanted to do was drive any kind of wedge between us because of my opinion. Fortunately I was smart enough to give the album a second listen, and then a third listen. Now that I’m on my 27th listen and am singing along to the songs in my truck, I feel I am qualified to write about the record effectively.

The thing is at no point did I ever feel the record was bad.  Day After Dinosaur is one of the most solid bands currently working the local scene and consistently puts on some of the best rock shows in the area, hands down. However, after the first listen I couldn’t see the direction the band had gone since their first EP, In Dynamic Stereo, and frankly I was disappointed.

Suddenly it occurred to me halfway through “As Fast as Lies” that this was what Day After Dinosaur had always been destined to be, a power punk rock trio that wasn’t afraid to bare its soul.

Science Fiction fires across the starting line with “Leave a Ghost,” a classic pop-punk bang that opens with a tip of the cap courtesy of Summerhill and wastes no time setting the tone for the whole record. Take one part Texas is the Reason, equal parts of Hum and Alkaline Trio and a splash of feel good Midwestern special sauce and you have “17,” a cocktail of tasty individual parts blended over lyrics about loss and regret;

Perfect for a blustery Midwestern winter night or a steamy Indiana summer afternoon.

At this point in the record it seems the band shifts gears. In “As Fast as Lies” guitarist Eric Ledbetter and bassist Adam Harsha channel the band into a single pulsating organism, riding Summerhill’s driving beat into a crazed frenzy of warm and fuzzy rock goodness which is immediately followed by “With All Our Science.” It is here that Ledbetter’s vocals and guitars truly shine through. The haunting guitar leads are matched only by his desperate howls.

When the band formed in 2007 I distinctly remember the excitement evident in Summerhill’s voice when he told me about the band he was going to get to form with Fuzz Factor ex-pats Harsha and Ledbetter. Punk rock, plain and simple was going to be the order for the day. A bit of Ledbetter’s Brit Pop flavor, a little of Summerhill’s Chicago style deep dish punk rock, and a dab of Harsha’s classic rock sensibility were going to blend together to form a uniquely local brand of punk, but somewhere along the line things got a little convoluted and the band took a trek down the Indie rock road that so many have travelled on and lost their way. Here I think is where my confusion stemmed from. In Dynamic Stereo still carried a lot of the weight of the band’s formative stage, but on Science Fiction this trio has begun to find its voice. More than anything else, the EP gives listeners a taste of what Day After Dinosaur has to come, and I for one can hardly wait to see what’s next.

3 NWI Music: Groovehead

Groovehead

Teddy Rogge

While the band Groovehead has been together since March of 2005, the bass, drum and guitar core of the band has been playing music together since 2001. The group has been restructured several times to create the highly entertaining and intense musical experience entitled Groovehead.

The six member band commands a wide array of musical instruments from guitars, drums, bass and bongos to harmonica and well each member may start the show on a certain instrument they might not end the show that way. For the band the instruments are not the only aspect that is freely shared during a performance as this ideal is carried over to the vocal duties.  “We all sing in at least one song,” said Shane, guitarist for the band. “It shows our versatility and talents…and plus we have more fun without a true ‘lead’ vocalist…no EGO that way!”

With six different vocalists the band can really cover a wide array of genres and song stylings. On any given night audience members are treated to anything from Metallica, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Rob Zombie, Rage Against the Machine, Run DMC, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Big and Rich, Staind, AC/DC, Pat Benatar and Alanis Morrisette to the Cranberries.  The band decides on what songs to perform collectively by a member proposing a song and the rest of the group giving either a thumbs up or thumbs down. Choices are not just as clear cut as whether the members like the song or not, the songs also have to pass certain criteria.

“First and foremost,” said

Aubrey, vocalist for the group, “will the crowd enjoy it? Can we perform this song with our own creative vibe and still stay true to the original artist? Will the song work on stage?”

Once the songs are chosen it’s time for the group to hone and craft the songs so they are ready to be performed live. The band puts a lot of time and thought into each performance.

“Our goal is to make it a party,” said Josh, bassist for the group.  “People come out on the weekend to enjoy themselves, and we just want to make it the most fun experience we can.  I think we do a great job of balancing the need to please the crowd with the need to make it fun for the band. The audience and the band feed off each other, and we are always trying to find that magic mix that keeps things interesting for us but still gets the crowd excited.”

Groovehead calls Elkhart home but covers a large portion of Indiana playing around five or six bars in the state on a regular basis. Very often the band can be seen at Simeri’s in South Bend, Skip’s in Angola and Cappy’s in Elkhart. The band will be appearing at Cappy’s on December 12th and at Skip’s Party Place on the 18th and 19th.

As the year comes to a close, the members of Groovehead plan to continue performing shows as well as take their performances to a new level.  “We want to continue to learn new material to keep things interesting for our regular fans,” said Josh. “We also plan on adding some acoustic shows in the coming months, which should be an interesting change of pace. It will be a challenge to translate our current performance into something more subdued and intimate, yet retain the energy that we try to bring to each show.”

So if you’re in the area when

Groovehead is going to be performing, be sure to check out a performance that is sure to be original and exciting.  “Really, you just have to be there to experience the energy and good times with Groovehead,” said DJ-CJ, vocalist for the group. “You don’t ever want to miss a Groovehead show. It’s always something different at every show we play. It’s always a good time and there is something for everyone and every musical taste.”
