Pepe’s Spaghetti Sauce Cook Off

By Mona Dickinson

Pepe’s in South Haven continued its fun-filled Sunday Tailgate Parties on Dec. 13 with its first annual Spaghetti Sauce Cook Off, won by Peg Fannin.

Her recipe bested eight other contestants, including Tina Harris and Yvette Strickland, who had previously won the Pepe’s Salsa and Chili Cook Offs, during the Sunday Tailgate Parties.  The various sauces were judged by a panel of four restaurant patrons, according to Eric Sanchez, manager and coordinator for the tailgate events. The contests were co-sponsored by Lou Sanchez of the Tippecanoe Beverage and Budweiser. Pepe’s provided the pasta.

“Each of the sauces had a little different taste,” Sanchez said.

“The judges said that the winning sauce was just right.” Other contestants included Carolyn Jozwiak, Courtney Stewart, Darrin Reiner, Phil Reiner Jr., Jason Hasting and Dave (Cat Man).

“We have really had fun with the contests during our Tailgate Parties,” said Sanchez. “We wanted to do something a little different and because of the turnout, we will plan to have the contests again next year.”

Sanchez invites local residents to enter their best chicken wing recipe in the next tailgate cook-off, which is planned for Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 7th, at Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, 809 McCool Rd. in South Haven.

To register, stop by the restaurant or call (219) 762-7666 for more information.
