Denyal
By: Courtenay Stewart
If you like music that breaks convention, tears
down walls, and incorporates new and innovative
elements, then Denyal is a band that you will love.
Years ago, this band was formed in a basement
when four musicians came together, with their
different musical influences, they decided to
violate borders and came up with a new concept
of metal music. Denyal is known as an original,
aggressive, emotional metal band from NW
Indiana and the Chicagoland areas. Denyal had
their first CD release party Saturday February 13
at Riff Raff’s bar in Valparaiso, IN. Playing to an
almost sold out crowd, their first show since being
in the studio was a great success.
The band consists of four members. Heath
Rogers on bass and vocals, Jeremy King on
drums, Ron Tomich on guitar and backup vocals,
and Justin Mayberry on guitar and backup vocals.
The band got their start when Heath and Jeremy
got together in 2000. They soon started jamming
with Ron, and Justin filled out the rest of the band.
They have been going strong for two years with
this lineup.
They all had different influences and liked all
different genres of music. They decided to start
writing their own music and the original sound
just seemed to flow. The name came almost by
accident. The band got their first show and didn’t
have a name, so they came up with “Denyal”, but
were planning on changing it after that first show.
Their first show did so well and the band gained so
much popularity that they stuck with it.
Their new release, called Scarred For Life is
a CD that is breaking the barriers of metal.
It has an avant-garde sound to it; almost
a new school meets classic heavy metal,
what would be described as hybrid metal.
Hybrid Metal is a sound that is collected
from diverse styles of music, anything from
hardcore metal to jazz, and has lyrics that
can be philosophical and emotional in
nature. This is a perfect fit, for this band. Their
sound features a lot of the great classic sounds,
such as Metallica and Pantera, but you can tell
that the band is also influenced from different
types of music, everything from Muddvain to Rush.
All the while keeping their original sound. The
lyrics, you can tell, are from real life situations
and have a very emotional feel to them. This CD
was a major accomplishment for the band. They
made it in Heath’s basement and did everything
themselves. They had to take all the little things
that you normally don’t hear live and change them,
since everything sticks out in the studio, which has
made them a better and much tighter band.
The band’s goal with this CD is to spread the word
about themselves and to possibly expand not only
in Northwest Indiana, but also to different regions,
markets, and whatever else may come. Therefore
they are sending their CD to many different labels
and management groups around the United
States. The band will continue to write and put
together a new album, but they are also in the
middle of putting together a tour of the Midwest.
As of now, there is no confirmation, so you will
have to check out their websites to find out where
Denyal will be playing next.
